Hace 5 días · James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, 1st Duke of Buccleuch, KG, PC (9 April 1649 – 15 July 1685) was a Dutch-born English nobleman and military officer. Originally called James Crofts or James Fitzroy , he was born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands , the eldest illegitimate son of Charles II of England with his mistress Lucy Walter .
Hace 4 días · Some members of Parliament even proposed to pass the crown to Charles's illegitimate son, James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth. In 1679, with the Exclusion Bill in danger of passing, Charles II dissolved Parliament. Two further Parliaments were elected in 1680 and 1681, but were dissolved for the same reason.

When Washington figured out that Clinton was heading to Monmouth, he reinforced Scott's command but had to put an officer in charge with sufficient rank to lead the 4,000 troops. He preferred and sent Lafayette to Englishtown, but Lee decided to seek the command.

The incumbents won the primary by a margin of nearly 4-1. Scott and Eagler defeated the Republican candidates, Clifton Councilman Jack Welsh and former freeholder Jack O’Brien, in the general election by a wide margin.
