Entering the army at a young age, he distinguished himself during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740 to 1748) as well as aided in putting down the Jacobite Rising in Scotland.
Wolfe (1727-59) was born at Westerham, Kent, the eldest son of Lieutenant-General Edward Wolfe. He was a career soldier and entered the army in 1741 aged 14. James Wolfe ingick i armén som fänrik 1741, deltog i slagen vid Dettingen (1743), Falkirk (1746), Culloden (1746) och Laeffeld (1747). År 1758 utnämndes han till brigadgeneral och deltog samma år i den under Jeffrey Amhersts befäl stående expeditionen mot de franska besittningarna i Nordamerika samt bidrog väsentligen till erövringen av den franska fästningen Louisburg i juli 1758.
