John George Brown studierte zunächst in England bei dem Porträt-und Stilllebenmaler Robert Scott Lauder und dem Maler, Stecher und Dichter William Bell Scott, bevor er nach Amerika auswanderte. Dort setzte er in den 1850er Jahren seine Studien bei dem ebenfalls aus England stammenden Miniaturmaler Thomas Seir Cummings fort.

Brown was born and raised in poverty in Durham, England, where he worked as an apprentice in the field of glassworks, eventually moving to Brooklyn at age 22 (in 1853) where he found a job at the Brooklyn Flint Glass Company.
