Diefenbaker (born Sept. 18, 1895, Neustadt, Ont., Can.—died Aug. 16, 1979, Ottawa) was the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party who was prime minister of Canada in 1957–63, following 22 years of uninterrupted Liberal rule. After serving in World War I, Diefenbaker practiced law in Saskatchewan.
