John Vink nacio en 1948, en Ixelles, Bélgica y estudió fotografía en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de La Cambre en Bruselas, en 1968. Ha sido periodista independiente desde 1971. Desde mediados de los ochenta, Vink ha dedicado mucho tiempo a proyectos a largo plazo, el primero de los cuales fue en Italia, entre 1984 y 1988.
