8 de ene. de 2007 · World War II. German troops invaded Norway on 9 April 1940, planning to capture the King and the Government in order to force the country to surrender. However, the Royal Family, the Government and most members of the Storting were able to flee before the occupying forces reached Oslo.
13 de feb. de 2012 · King Olav V was born at Appleton House in Norfolk, England, on 2 July 1903. He was the son and only child of King Haakon VII (1872-1957) and Queen Maud (1869-1938), then Prince Carl of Denmark and Princess Maud of Wales. Christened Alexander Edward Christian Frederik, he was given the name Olav when his father was elected King of Norway in 1905.
The Norwegian and Allied forces succeeded in recapturing Narvik but withdrew again on June 7, when the Allied troops were needed in France. The same day, King Haakon VII, Crown Prince Olaf, and the government left for London, and on June 10 the Norwegian troops in northern Norway capitulated.
13 de jun. de 2013 · Early years as King. King Haakon and Queen Maud spent their first years in Norway becoming thoroughly acquainted with their new country. In connection with their coronation in Nidaros Cathedral, the King and Queen travelled to Trondheim by train, horse and carriage, and boat, making frequent stops along the way.
King Olav's leadership during the Second World War made him a symbol of Norwegian independence and national unity. As King Olav's wife, Princess Märtha, died of cancer, the King Olav V's Prize for Cancer Research was established in 1992. A 2005 poll by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation named King Olav "Norwegian of the Century".
