El origen de esta multitudinaria "batalla” de tomates se remonta a una pelea juvenil sucedida en el año 1945 y, desde entonces, no ha dejado de celebrarse ningún año. El último miércoles del mes de agosto se celebra en la localidad de Buñol la Tomatina.
La Tomatina ( Spanish pronunciation: [la tomaˈtina]) is a festival that is held in the Valencian town of Buñol, in the east of Spain 30 kilometres (19 mi) from the Mediterranean, in which participants throw tomatoes and get involved in a tomato fight purely for entertainment purposes.
La Tomatina is a festival held on a Wednesday towards the end of August in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region in Spain. Tens of thousands of participants come from all over the world to fight in a harmless battle where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.
Over the years this celebration began to become popular in the rest of Spain. Since then, year after year the excitement for it and the number of participants has grown. The overwhelming success led to La Tomatina of Buñol being declared a Festival of Interest to International Tourists by the General Secretariat of Tourism in 2002.
