Inspired by William Shakespeare 's play Romeo and Juliet , the story is set in the mid-1950s in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, then a multiracial , blue-collar neighborhood.

Hace 3 días · Whereas in West Side Story, Bernstein was able to very much marry the musical motifs to character. It’s just a very, very clever piece of writing. And incredibly emotional. Such a template. And a great example of collaboration, with Bernstein on music, Stephen Sondheim on lyrics, Jerome Robbins doing choreography and Arthur Laurents’s story.
