After Joseph II died in February 1790, Leopold was elected emperor (and also became king of Hungary and archduke of Austria).

He was a son of Emperor Francis I and his wife, Empress Maria Theresa.

Rather than being a key moment for abolitionism in Europe, it helped secure the 'Scramble for Africa'. Throughout the 19th century, the anti-slave trade movement was in full swing in Europe.
