Lincoln-Zephyr Continental (1940) was the first time the name Continental appeared on a car from Lincoln, as a model under Lincoln-Zephyr rather than a separate model. They were partially hand-built since dies for machine-pressing were not constructed until 1941.

Born from the visionary mind of Edsel Ford and executed by chief stylist Bob Gregorie, this car was initially conceived as a one-off personal vehicle for Ford himself.
This first generation of the Continental would re-appear after World War II and would become the final American vehicle line with a factory-produced V-12 engine, ending in 1948. Lincoln introduced its first all-new postwar designs in 1949, sharing similar design cues with its Mercury sibling, and powered by a 336.7 cubic-inch V8 engine.
