Overview. Linlithgow Palace is located in the West Lothian market town of Linlithgow, more-or-less halfway between the cities of Stirling and Edinburgh.Although mostly roofless and in ruin, it’s an impressive building that offers lots of history to discover and has enough nooks and crannies that children will be kept occupied for the best part of an afternoon.
Linlithgow Palace is a popular visitor attraction not far from Edinburgh, and it is the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. Once a majestic royal residence of the Stewarts, now it even plays a part in the “Outlander” TV series. King James V. King James V was born April 10, 1512 in Linlithgow Palace and died on 14th December 1542 in Falkland Palace. He reigned as King of Scotland from 1513 to 1542. Renaissance palace of the Stewart kings begun in 1424. Visited by Prince Charles Edward in September 1745 , it is said that the 16th century fountain in the courtyard ran with wine in his honour. The Duke of Cumberland’s army burned down most of the house in January 1746 but the impressive shell remains.
