The Margraviate of Brandenburg (German: Markgrafschaft Brandenburg) was a major principality of the Holy Roman Empire from 1157 to 1806 that played a pivotal role in the history of Germany and Central Europe. Brandenburg developed out of the Northern March founded in the territory of the Slavic Wends.

It became one of the seven electorates of the Holy Roman Empire in 1356. Under the elector Frederick William (1640–88), Brandenburg-Prussia grew to be a leading power.

In a legal document from the 3 rd of October of the same year, he called himself Margrave of Brandenburg for the first time. This was a decisive turn in the history of Germany. The Margraviate of Brandenburg grew and prospered until it became part of the newly created Duchy of Prussia under the House of Hohenzollern.
