Martha Washington’s niece, Frances Bassett, married George Washington’s nephew, George Augustine Washington, at Mount Vernon on October 15, 1785. The couple lived at Mount Vernon for most of the next decade. In April of 1787, Frances Washington gave birth to her first child. Sadly the boy became sick and died within the month.
