His daughter Mary, then 19, inherited the duchy. Margaret promoted Mary’s marriage to the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian, and they were married in August of 1477. Margaret supported Maximilian and his policies, and he in turn saw to it that her estates were safely in her hands. In 1482, Mary of Burgundy died at age 25 from a fall from a horse.
Mary was born on February 13, 1457 in Brussels at the ducal castle of Coudenberg. Her father Charles was the son of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy and Isabel of Portugal. His title at the time was Count of Charolais. Her mother was Isabella, daughter of the Duke of Bourbon. On the day Mary was born, her father had left to go hunting.

She died in March 1482 aged 25, following injuries sustained during a hunting accident a number of weeks earlier.
