Michael Eavis was born in 1935 and grew up on Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset. He attended Wells Cathedral School and then went to HMS Worcester (now the Thames Nautical Training College). At the age of 17, he joined the Union-Castle Line as a trainee midshipman.
