Marshal Michel Ney, “the bravest of the brave,” remains perhaps the most fascinating of Napoleon’s marshals, yet over the last 200 years, historians have taken great delight in denigrating Ney, attributing to him all sorts of negative behaviors, from periodic apparent tactical incompetence to willfully disobeying Napoleon’s orders.
