Nell Gwyn and Moll Davis were such rivals for the king's affection that Nell was said to have purposely dropped a powerful laxative into food Moll was to eat before she was to leave for the king's chamber. Moll, however, did not leave empty-handed: Charles awarded her an annual pension for life of £1,000.

Moll Davies, also an actress, had a child by the King. The child was known as Lady Mary Tudor. Moll was given a house in Suffolk Street and a ring worth £600 by the King before she fell from favour.
The rivalry between Nell, Lady Castlemaine, Louise de Keroualle and Moll Davies made the King's life difficult at times. He had 13 children in all by his mistresses. Unlike some of Charles' other mistresses, Nell was popular with the public for her ready wit, she was the least grasping and never suffered from any illusions regarding herself.
The plan failed; reportedly, Gwyn asked £500 a year to be kept and this was rejected as it was regarded as too expensive. Buckingham had an alternative plan, which was to set the King up with Moll Davis, an actress with the rival Duke's Company. Davis would be Gwyn's first rival for the King.

Moll Davies was a member of Sir William Davenant's troupe at Lincoln's Inn, when she caught the eye of Charles II, king of England. In keeping with the fashion of comparing the king's mistresses, Samuel Pepys proclaimed her a better actress than Nell Gwynn. Davies' relationship with Charles was short lived, though they had one daughter together.
