Wing Commander George Melville-Jackson, who has died aged 89, was a successful fighter pilot who flew in support of Operation Pedestal, the crucial convoy that resupplied the beleaguered island of Malta in 1942; in later life he urged the Home Secretary to grant a pardon to Henry VIII's second wife, Anne Boleyn.

  3. IIRC the RN took fleet carriers off of sub-hunting duty after HMS Courageous was sunk on September 17, 1939. Ark Royal was not sub-hunting when sunk, was ferrying aircraft to Malta. RN also lost HMS Eagle to Uboats during a Malta operation (PEDESTAL).

It was repeatedly pummeled by Axis air and submarine attacks as it ground its way towards Malta, with most of the merchant ships sunk during the passage, along with an aircraft carrier and two cruisers.
