The Peter and Paul Cathedral (Russian: Петропавловский собор, romanized: Petropavlovskiy sobor) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located inside the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg, Russia. It is the first and oldest landmark in St. Petersburg, built between 1712 and 1733 on Hare Island along the Neva River.

  4. The cathedral is the largest Catholic church in Pennsylvania, and was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The cathedral has been the site of two papal Masses, one celebrated by Pope John Paul II in 1979, and the other by Pope Francis in 2015.

  5. The Peter and Paul Cathedral was sanctified on June 28, 1733. It had been built for 19 years (1712-1733) with the attentive participation of Peter the Great, Catherine I, Peter II and Anna Ioanovna. After the events of 1917 lots of values were moved to Moscow, where most of them got lost.

  7. Peter and Paul Cathedral is one of the finest baroque buildings in St. Petersburg, and was the tallest building in the city until the 20th century. Built 1712-1733, it was arguably the greatest work of architect Domenico Trezzini, and a bold statement of Peter the Great's desire to adopt Western European styles in architecture and in religion.
