Philipp, Prince and Landgrave of Hesse (6 November 1896 – 25 October 1980) was head of the Electoral House of Hesse from 1940 to 1980. Philipp joined the Nazi Party in 1930, and, when they gained power with the appointment of Adolf Hitler as Chancellor in 1933, he became Oberpräsident of the Prussian Province of Hesse-Nassau.
By the spring of 1943, Prince Philipp von Hessen’s relationship with Hitler had begun to fall apart. After Philipp gave Hitler an honest report of the situation in Italy, explaining issues with Mussolini and a likely political collapse, the German dictator became cold towards the prince.

By 1940, the head of the house of Hesse-Kassel was Prince Philipp von Hessen, who was considered by some to be part of Hitler’s inner circle. It is nearly impossible to write about any royal family in Europe after 1900 without circling back to Queen Victoria of England.
