She was the daughter of Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Viktoria of Hessen, and was the great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria of Great Britain. During the First World War, she volunteered with the Red Cross and served as a nurse from March 1915 to July 1917.

Milford Haven’s younger daughter, Louise (1889–1965), became in 1923 the second wife of Crown Prince Gustav Adolf, who in 1950 became King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden. The younger of Milford Haven’s two sons, Louis, was the prominent British military leader and statesman Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma.
