She was the third and youngest daughter and the fifth of the six children of the Prince and Princess of Wales (the future King Edward VII of the United Kingdom and Princess Alexandra of Denmark, daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark).

She travelled to London privately in October 1938 and fell ill whilst staying at a hotel. Abdominal surgery was carried out and her situation appeared hopeful at first.
