Could anyone give me any insight as to why Ge'ez died as a language? I was unable to get away from work to go to church for Orthodox Good Friday so I'm livestreaming a service from Ethiopia. Most of it is in Ge'ez and I'm lamenting the fact that I don't understand any of it. PS. Hope everyone on here who commemorates has a blessed Siklet. <3.
Because it’s more of an ancient language, kinda how people study Latin if they’re in the Catholic Church in religious contexts, and you don’t see Latin being used as the official language anywhere. It’s the same for Ge’ez, it’s more used and learned in religious contexts, especially in the EOTC. Hope this helped!
Tigrinya has እታ፟ for Ge'ez (ይ)እቲ; given how Tigrinya derives other demonstrative pronouns(እቲ፟+ኡ > እቱ፟, እቲ፟+ኣ > እታ፟, እቲ፟+ኦም > እቶ፟ም), wouldn't this be a logical development? The preposition for "for," which is ምን in Tigre and እም/እምነ፟ in Ge'ez, is another issue.
