Life. Adelaide was born on 13 August 1792 at Meiningen, Thuringia, Germany. She was the first child of George I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen and Luise Eleonore. At her baptism, she had twenty-one godparents, including: her mother. Maria Theresa of Naples and Sicily, the Holy Roman Empress. Maria Carolina of Austria, the Queen of Naples and Sicily.
The following year, a clubhouse and grandstand were erected at Memorial Drive, the northern grandstand being the former stand from Adelaide Oval, which was dismantled and then reassembled. In 1938 a large permanent grandstand was erected on the northern side of the courts.Over the years many major events have been held on the grass courts including the Davis Cup and Australian Open Championships.

Queen Adelaide. Adelheid Luise Therese Karoline Amalie (1792-1849), born in the German Duchy of Meiningen, was the eldest child of Georg I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen. In 1818 she wed William Henry, Duke of Clarence and St Andrews, who became King William IV of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and King of Hanover on 26 June 1830.
