Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn (the fourth son of King George III ), and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. After the deaths of her father and grandfather in 1820, she was raised under close supervision by her mother and her comptroller, John Conroy.

Edward VII, king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British dominions and emperor of India from 1901. An immensely popular and affable sovereign and a leader of society, he was the second child and eldest son of Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

The Coronation was set for 26 June 1902, but only two days beforehand the King was forced to postpone it until 9 August, owing to an attack of appendicitis which required an emergency operation.
