Since 2003 British Sign Language (BSL) has been officially recognised as a minority language throughout the UK and as an official language here in Scotland. BSL is the preferred language of nearly 150,000 people across the UK and incredibly, much like verbal languages, small variations can exist from city to city, meaning it almost has its own set of regional dialects.
This website is a celebration of the pioneering work of Dr John Jamieson (1759-1838), whose Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language, published in 1808, was a landmark in the development of historical lexicography and in the study of the Scots language.

The original inspiration for this Dictionary came from a slim volume The Scottish Traveller Dialects compiled by Jess Smith and Robert Dawson (Blackwell, Derbyshire 2002). However, the distinctive language of Scotland’s Gypsies and Travellers has never, to my knowledge, been brought together in dictionary form before.

The Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue (DOST) is a 12-volume dictionary that documents the history of the Scots language covering Older Scots from the earliest written evidence in the 12th century until the year 1700. DOST was compiled over a period of some eighty years, from 1931 to 2002.
