It was founded in 1552 by Edward VI by Royal Charter, to reconstitute the town's collegiate foundations of the 6th and 10th centuries which were disestablished in the reformation.

Tithes in Bicton, Frankwell, Shelton, Woodcote and Horton, and Whitley and Welbatch were granted to Shrewsbury corporation as part of the endowment of Shrewsbury School in 1552.
