Sir Robert Walpole became the 1st Earl of Orford in 1742. Ownership passed to his son and grandson, the second and third earls. On the death of the third earl in 1791, it reverted to Sir Robert Walpole's youngest son and uncle of the 3rd Earl, Horace Walpole, who became the 4th Earl of Orford.
A few years later on the 18th March 1745 Sir Robert Walpole passed away at the age of 69 – but he left behind far more than a unique political legacy. Walpole not only had great influence in parliament and with the Royal Family, but he also created one of Norfolk’s most iconic buildings – and one of the most beautiful houses in the country.

Robert Walpole. Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford was a British politician. He is regarded by many as the first de facto Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (then called Great Britain ). The position of prime minister was not actually official at that time. Walpole He was born in Houghton, Norfolk on 26 August 1676. He died on 18 March 1745.
