Southwestern Oregon Community College (formerly SWOCC, now SOCC) in Coos Bay is the oldest community college in Oregon. It was formed in a tax district election in 1961, which included Coos and western Douglas counties.
Southwestern holds an important place in the community college movement in Oregon. It was the first community college chartered after the law changed in 1959 that allowed college districts to be created. It was the people of the South Coast who led the charge to get the law changed.
