Samuel Houston ( / ˈhjuːstən / ⓘ, HEW-stən; March 2, 1793 – July 26, 1863) was an American general and statesman who played a prominent role in the Texas Revolution. He served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate.

The Final Texas Years: 1842-1863. Houston buys the property in Huntsville to build the Woodland Home in 1847. He was sworn in to his first full term as U.S. Senator in 1848. In 1850, Texas ratifies the Texas Section of the series of bills making up the Compromise of 1850. Houston is pleased, having spoken for the Compromise 13 times.
