Sweden joined the EU in 1995. Norway has never been a member of the EU. NATO. While Norway was one of the founding members of NATO, Sweden has only been a member since 2024. In 2023, Sweden and Finland both sought membership as a consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Sometimes the path to true independence doesn’t exactly run smoothly.
The Union between Sweden and Norway is an overriding theme of the history of Sweden in the 19th century. On 4 November 1814, the kingdoms of Sweden and Norway formed a personal union under one king. The two countries had completely separate institutions, except for the foreign service led by the king through the Swedish foreign minister.
The Swedish-Norwegian union. From the Swedish viewpoint, the union with Norway was a disappointment. Instead of an alliance of the two countries, the incompatibilities grew, and the union was actually confined to a joint monarchy and foreign policy.
Norway - Fjords, Vikings, Arctic: Haakon’s successor was Magnus VII Eriksson, the young son of his daughter, Ingebjørg, and Duke Erik, son of Magnus I of Sweden. The child was also elected to the Swedish crown in 1319, creating a personal union between the two countries that lasted until 1355.
