William Lassell (18 de junio de 1799 - 5 de octubre de 1880) fue un fabricante de cerveza británico que destacó como astrónomo aficionado. 1 2 3 4 5 6 De formación autodidacta, descubrió con sus telescopios (cuyos espejos fabricó él mismo) las lunas Tritón de Neptuno; y Ariel y Umbriel de Urano .
composición exacta de la mezcla de metales que utilizaba, y Lassell recurrió a Lord Rosse, noble irlandés que había conseguido igualar e incluso mejorar el proceso de fabricación de Herschel. Construyó un observatorio en Starfield, cerca de Liverpool, y fabricó un telescopio reflector de 60 cm, puliendo él mismo la lente.
