16 de abr. de 2024 · Lady Jane Grey (born October 1537, Bradgate, Leicestershire, England—died February 12, 1554, London) was the titular queen of England for nine days in 1553. Beautiful and intelligent, she reluctantly allowed herself at age 15 to be put on the throne by unscrupulous politicians; her subsequent execution by Mary Tudor aroused universal sympathy.
The Execution of Lady Jane Grey is an oil painting by Paul Delaroche, completed in 1833, which is now in the National Gallery in London. It was enormously popular in the decades after it was painted, but in the 20th century realist historical paintings fell from critical favour and it was kept in storage for many decades, for much of which it was thought lost.
Hace 4 días · When first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1834, the Execution of Lady Jane Grey was an immediate sensation. Although not historically accurate in many details – for example, the execution actually took place outdoors not inside, as shown here – the painting’s combination of intense melodrama and realism proved extremely popular with the public.
