Alexander's mother considered the Hesse family grossly inferior to the Hohenzollerns and Romanovs. In April 1840, Alexander's engagement to Princess Marie was officially announced. In August, the 16-year-old Marie left Darmstadt for Russia.

Marie’s father, Hermann Gundert (also the namesake of his grandson), managed the publishing house at the time, and Johannes Hesse succeeded him in 1893.
