United States - Colonization, Revolution, Constitution: When Columbus arrived, he found the New World inhabited by peoples who in all likelihood had originally come from the continent of Asia. Probably these first inhabitants had arrived 20,000 to 35,000 years before in a series of migrations from Asia to North America by way of the Bering Strait.
The history of the lands that became the United States began with the arrival of the first people in the Americas around 15,000 BC. Numerous indigenous cultures formed, and many saw transformations in the 16th century away from more densely populated lifestyles and towards reorganized polities elsewhere.
United States History: Early History During the world’s most recent Ice Age, which occurred roughly 35,000 years ago, much of the world’s water was frozen into big sheets of ice. A land bridge, which was estimated to be as wide as 1,500 kilometers (932 miles), then connected Asia and North America.
