Stein published her first—and some say her best—book in 1909. Three Lives is comprised of three short tales, each of which investigates the essential nature of its main character. Of these, “Melanctha,” the portrait of a young mixed-race girl who suffers an unhappy affair with a black doctor, has been particularly singled out for praise.
