The Domesday Survey records the existence of a royal town at Windsor containing ninety-five closes, but it is probable that this entry refers to Old Windsor, which during the Saxon period had been the site of a royal house, and not to the new town, which was already, perhaps, beginning to grow up nearer the castle.
