The House of Stuart (or Stewart) was a Scottish royal dynasty. Later the Stuarts also became rulers of England, uniting the two realms. The Stuart period of British history spanned 111 years, during which time there was a civil war (1642–51) and an interregnum, or a time without a monarch (1649–60).
