When The Velvet Underground & Nico album was released in March 1967 on Verve Records, with its Andy Warhol-designed, peel-off banana cover, it was far from a chart-topper. In fact, as the famed quote attributed to Brian Eno famously put it, the album may not have sold many copies, “but everyone who bought it formed a band.”
The Velvet Underground & Nico werd opgenomen tijdens drie verschillende sessies in april, mei en november 1966. Het overgrote deel van de nummers is geschreven en bezongen door Lou Reed en behandelen onderwerpen die toentertijd als taboe golden, waaronder drugsgebruik ( Heroin ) en sadomasochisme ( Venus in furs ).

Foi gravado em 1966, enquanto a banda participava da turnê experimental de Andy Warhol , "Exploding Plastic Inevitable".
