Early life. Roth was born on 14 May 1961 in Dulwich, London. His mother, Ann, was a painter and teacher. His father Ernie, was a Fleet Street journalist and painter. [3] [4] [5] His father was born in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, to a family of Irish descent.
