It was given by Dr T.C. Geldart, Master of Trinity Hall from 1852 to 1877, to the College to mark the only instance in the long history of the Mathematics Tripos when a Trinity Hall undergraduate was ‘Senior Wrangler’, that is, the student who came top of the Mathematics Tripos, the exhausting and unique Cambridge trial of intellectual prowess.
