Powder Flask. On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 375. This flask combines several techniques for working ivory. The main surfaces are lathe-turned in concentric circles, the center carved in low relief, and the edges carved in high relief with hunters and their prey.
A powder flask is a small container for gunpowder, which was an essential part of shooting equipment with muzzle-loading guns, before pre-made paper cartridges became standard in the 19th century.
