As a result of the Treaty, Lieutenant-Governor William Hobson declared New Zealand a colony of Britain in May 1840. There are 2 versions of te Tiriti o Waitangi, one in te reo Māori and one in English.
19 de abr. de 2024 · 1840. The original Tiriti o Waitangi document is signed by Hobson and rangatira at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands on 6 February. Copies are also sent to various parts of New Zealand over a 7-month period for other rangatira to sign. Hobson proclaims British sovereignty over New Zealand on 21 May.
