Thomas Seymour sought to overturn his brother's position on the regency council by his personal influence over the young king, and also possibly by making a royal marriage. Although his name had been linked to Mary Howard, Duchess of Richmond, he was still unmarried at the time of Henry VIII's death.

In 1547, Katherine Parr, Elizabeth's stepmother, married Thomas Seymour, the Lord Admiral and King Edward's younger Seymour uncle.

Seymour’s dangerous and fleeting life ended after two gruesome swings of the axe.

Linda Porter, in “Katherine the Queen: The Remarkable Life of Katherine Parr”, writes of how he died bravely and that it took two blows of the axe to cut off his head. Porter quotes words that Seymour wrote in the Tower as he came to terms with his downfall and attempted to make peace with his Maker:-

El 20 de marzo de ese mismo año Thomas Seymour fue ejecutado en la Torre de Londres. Todos sus bienes (gran parte heredados de la reina Catalina Parr) fueron confiscados por la Corona, dejando a su hija al cuidado de Catherine Willoughby , duquesa de Suffolk.
