7 de ago. de 2017 · In 1893 Alfred Deakin coined the term ‘Austral-Asia’ and argued, in Irrigated India and Temple and Tomb in India, that India and its citizens were central to Australia’s future. By 1901, he was furiously defending the White Australia policy, warning Australian citizens of the threat of non-Europeans to the future of the new nation.
Alfred Deakin was the second Prime Minister of Australian Federation and had been instrumental in formation of the Australian commonwealth. He was born to a working-class family and received education from different institutions. However, he did not show much interest in studies until he was acquainted with his teacher John Edward Bromby.
There were many competing agendas and self-interests in the nation and often it looked like all was lost and another 50 years would pass before the nation would be ready. Travelling to London in 1887 and again in 1900 to debate the important issues facing the two nations, he presented Australia's position to the British Colonial office that was not often supportive.
