Rather than being a key moment for abolitionism in Europe, it helped secure the 'Scramble for Africa'. Throughout the 19th century, the anti-slave trade movement was in full swing in Europe.
Hace 5 días · Obviously, what ignited this ire is not, or at least not directly, what Leopold II did in Brussels but what he did, or let people do, in the Congo between the 1885 Berlin conference that endowed him with the “Etat independent du Congo” as a personal property and the latter’s transformation into a Belgian colony in 1906.
