By 927 Wessex had reconquered the Danelaw, and Alfred’s grandson, Athelstan, had become king of all England; thereafter all kings of Wessex were kings of England. The region figures prominently in legends of King Arthur ( see Arthurian legend ), and the designation “Wessex” was used by Thomas Hardy to represent the region of southwestern England in which he set his works of fiction.

Northumbria was later dominated by the Norse following the invasion of the Great Heathen Army of Vikings in 865 CE and was finally absorbed into the Kingdom of the English by Eadred of Wessex (r.946-955 CE) in 954 CE.

Athelstan (died October 27, 939) was the first West Saxon king to have effective rule over the whole of England. Wessex was invaded in 871, and although Æthelred and Alfred won some victories and succeeded in preventing the conquest of their kingdom, a number of defeats, heavy losses of men and the arrival of a fresh Danish army in England compelled Alfred to pay the Danes to leave Wessex.
