The Coronation was set for 26 June 1902, but only two days beforehand the King was forced to postpone it until 9 August, owing to an attack of appendicitis which required an emergency operation.

Because of his mother’s long reign, he spent most of his life performing only ceremonial duties and living a life of leisure.
