The city of Saint Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter the Great on 27 May 1703. It became the capital of the Russian Empire and remained as such for more than two hundred years (1712–1728, 1732–1918). Saint Petersburg ceased being the capital in 1918 after the October Coup.
Around the fortress and shipyard Peter began the building of a new city to serve as his “window on Europe.” Just upstream of the Peter-Paul Fortress, the city’s first small house was built for Peter himself during the early days of the St. Petersburg’s construction (it is preserved as a museum).

5 de may. de 2003 · The Nevsky Prospekt, the longest and most important street, was designed by a Frenchman, Jean-Baptiste Le Blonde, and constructed in 1711 by Swedish prisoners-of-war, who swept it clean every Saturday. St Petersburg was said to have 50,000 houses in 1714 and it was the first Russian city to have a proper police force.
