William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, KG (14 December 1748 – 29 July 1811), was a British nobleman, aristocrat, and politician. He was the eldest son of William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire, by his wife, the heiress Lady Charlotte Boyle, suo jure Baroness Clifford, who brought in considerable money and estates to the Cavendish family.

William, the 5th Duke of Devonshire, served as Lord High Treasurer of Ireland and Governor of Cork, and Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, but is perhaps more widely remembered for the politics of his private life.

William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire (1748 - 1811) The 5th Duke of Devonshire served as Lord High Treasurer of Ireland and Governor of Cork, and Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire. He was invited to join the Cabinet three times, but he declined on each occasion.
On 6 June 1774, he married Georgiana [d. 1806], daughter of John, 1st Earl Spencer. They had a son, William Spencer (who became the 6th Duke of Devonshire), and two daughters. Around 1790, the Duke commissioned the artist Gainsborough Dupont to paint his wife's portrait (now in the NGA).
